Objects that Start with M
When we were kids, we learned that the word “Mat” begins with the letter M. Now that we have grown up it’s important to discover and learn new vocabulary that improves our culture.
Furniture that starts with the letter M
Malacca: A cane made from the stem of a rattan palm.
- Malacca come in many shapes and sizes and can be sought by collectors.
Mallet: A tool resembling a hammer but with a large head (usually wooden); used to drive wedges or ram down paving stones or for crushing or beating or flattening or smoothing. A light drumstick with a rounded head that is used to strike such percussion instruments as chimes, kettledrums, marimbas, glockenspiels, etc… Sports implement with a long handle and a head like a hammer; used in sports (polo or croquet) to hit a ball.
- I would say that a mallet has many different uses, such as building other tools, and playing an old game.
Manakin: A life sized dummy used to display clothes.
- Sahara daydreamed about what she would look like in the outfit the manakin in the window was wearing.
Manger: A container (usually in a barn or stable) from which cattle or horses feed.
- My horses ate peacefully from their manger or trough as others may know it.
Mangle: Clothes dryer for drying and ironing laundry by passing it between two heavy heated rollers.
- Today mangles are used to press or flatten sheets, tablecloths, and clothing.
Mantel: Shelf that projects from wall above fireplace.
- Marie likes to put a lot of knickknacks on the mantel in her living room.
Marquetry: Inlaid veneers are fitted together to form a design or picture that is then used to ornament furniture.
- Markus is a part of a team that would get together for a Marquetry

Macramé: -a relatively coarse lace; made by weaving and knotting cords.
- Macramé was long crafted by sailors, especially in elaborate or ornamental knotting forms
Madras: A light patterned cotton cloth.
- Madras isused primarily for summer clothing such as pants, shorts, dresses, and jackets.
Mailbag: Letter carrier’s shoulder bag. A pouch used in the shipment of mail.
- Amailbag throughout the United States history has been called various names.
Manginess: -a lack of elegance as a consequence of wearing threadbare or dirty clothing.
- The Manginess of my brother clothing is overbearing.
Maillot: Tights for dancers or gymnasts; a woman’s one-piece bathing suit.
- A maillot swimsuit mostly consists of a tank-style torso with high-cut legs.
Manta: -a blanket that is used as a cloak or shawl.
- My best friend never goes anywhere without a manta because she hates the cold.

Machine: A motor vehicle with four wheels; usually propelled by an internal combustion engine. Any mechanical or electrical device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the performance of human tasks. A device for overcoming resistance at one point by applying force at some other point.
- “The machine is powered by this switch here.” He pointed to the spot as he passed.
Machmeter: Speedometer for measuring the speed of an aircraft relative to the speed of sound.
Mainframe: (Computer science) the part of a computer (a microprocessor chip) that does most of the data processing. A large digital computer serving 100-400 users and occupying a special air-conditioned room.
- The term originally referred to large cabinets called mainframes.
Magnetron: A diode vacuum tube in which the flow of electrons from a central cathode to a cylindrical anode is controlled by crossed magnetic and electric fields; used mainly in microwave oscillators.
- A magnetron can be found in microwave.
Plastic that starts with the letter M
Macintosh: A waterproof raincoat made of rubberized fabric.
- Molly made sure to put a Macintosh raincoat on her daughter before heading out into the rain.
