Animals that Start with D

Mammals
Deerhound -very large and tall rough-coated dog bred for hunting deer; known as the royal dog of Scotland.

Reptiles
Dipsosaurus – desert iguana
During the mating season, the dipsosaurus belly, turns into a pinkish color.
Draco -a reptile genus known as flying dragons or flying lizards.

The daw, like magpies, will pick up shiny objects that they use hold onto in their nests.
Dodo -extinct heavy flightless bird of Mauritius related to pigeons.
The dodo bird was quickly put to extinction by people because it was hunted very often and easily since it couldn’t fly, nor was it fast.

The dolichonyx is a small bird that lives in northen U.S but migrates to South America.
Dovekie -small short-billed auk abundant in Arctic regions.
The dovekie actually migrate south into the northern parts of the Atlantic and breed there, where they usually lay only one egg.

Duck is the more common name for drake, they are related to swans and geese, but can be found in both fresh and sea water.
Insects and Critters
Dactylopiidae -cochineal insects.
The dactylopiidae has been used to make red dye carmine since as early as the 10th century.
Danaid -large tropical butterfly with degenerate forelegs and an unpleasant taste.
The Danaid butterfly is a mimic butterfly, the female’s upper side of the wing will mimic that of a Monarch butterfly.
Dayfly-slender insect with delicate membranous wings having an aquatic larval stage and terrestrial adult stage usually lasting less than two days.
The dayfly, lives a year in their immature stage, live only a few minutes to a day, depending on the species.
Deathwatch -bores through wood making a ticking sound popularly thought to presage death.
The deathwatch beetle, makes a ticking sound to attract mates; it can be heard on summer nights
Dendroctonus -genus of small bark beetles destructive especially to mature conifers
The dendroctonus is a dark brown beetle, a destructive beetle when it comes to destroying trees.
